Higher stakes, deeper emotions, stronger connections, scarier villains, more action, more magical monsters, more fantastical settings. I loved Guardian and this was somehow even better. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a rivals-to-lovers story so much! Kai and Aranya have great banter, and Delan is such a great father figure/sidekick/chaperone This book was so exciting, funny, romantic, action-packed, and heart-warming. I received a copy of this book from the author, all opinions, however, are my own. But everyone later acted so surprised that Kai's family was working with Fang, like? They? were holding? the kidnapped princess? in their basement? why on earth would anyone think that they WEREN'T working for Fang after that point?Īs a whole I greatly enjoyed this installment! Can't wait for book 3. If they did mention it to the capital, I must have missed that part and it still leaves the question why his family wasn't arrested because, there were multiple witnesses, they probably didn't need much else to at least investigate. One thing that I still am not entirely clear on however is why did nobody tell the capital about Kai's family after they dealt with them in book one? I mean, they KIDNAPPED a secret services agent, threatened other agents of the crown, not to mention that they were holding the princess in their basement felt mildly treasonous not to mention that they were clearly against the crown.
Although I couldn't have asked for a better ending for them. I'm very curious about Meiling's story, but there's a part of me that is definitely sad to be wrapping up Aryana's and Kai's tale.
(all the while Delan grumbling in the background about them both being ridiculous) I love Aryana and Kai as a couple and Kai's ever present need for snuggles warring with Aryana's desire for propriety. This book works to build off the characters and world building of book one slowly amping up the tension and the stakes as we go. They're dysfunctional team/family is perfect and I love the relationships between these three. Kai, Aryana, and Delan will forever have my heart.
